Animals

Animals are not uncommon in picture books, but each of the three books represented by these previous guests on the podcast offers a unique and memorable story that allows us to understand ourselves better and, at the same time, is wholly entertaining.

Brendan Wenzel wrote a story about perception involving a cat as seen through the eyes of a collection of other animals.

They All Saw a Cat

(They All Saw a Cat, Chronicle Books, 2016)

Brendan talks about expressing perception, building in a lot of questions, and aspiring to create a book that children could use as a diving off point. Click Here to view the full post on All The Wonders.

Lucy Ruth Cummins built tension in a story about a hungry lion and a group of animals that gets smaller and smaller as the story progresses.

(A Hungry Lion, or a Dwindling Assortment of Animals, Atheneum Books for Young Readers, 2016)

Lucy talks about knowing when to stop, playing it close to your chest, and the essential role of predators when make-believe playing as animals. Click Here to view the full post on All The Wonders.

Deborah Freedman introduced us to a character too shy to leave his home in the gutter of the book.

(Shy, Viking Books for Young Readers, 2016)

...and here's a vintage episode about animals you might have missed.
