Resources to Support African American Heritage Year-Round at Ideas+Inspiration
I write a blog post for Upstart each month on one selected topic from the children's activity calendars for their Ideas+Inspiration blog.
For February I wrote about Black History Month, but used the opportunity to emphasize the need and importance to help your students celebrate African American heritage throughout the year. We may be doing more harm than good when we devote a single month to commemorating the accomplishments of people of a given ethnicity, gender, or background. And so by clicking on the link to this resource I hope you'll find many tools to allow you not only to build better understanding toward the origin of Black History Month, but also numerous websites, lesson plans, and ideas to help support your celebrations of African American heritage all year long. As I say in the article, no matter where you are or what your experience has been celebrating Black History Month, use this month to "Start small. Be intentional. And know that your choices are making a difference in the lives of your students."
