Alison Green Myers and George Brown are the Program Director and Executive Director, respectively, of the Highlights Foundation, a retreat center in the beautiful Pocono Mountains in Honesdale, Pennsylvania. Each year, the Highlights Foundation offers more than 40 workshops covering a wide range of topics and offering encouragement for both beginning and published authors and illustrators. Workshops are led by children's publishing professionals, including editors, authors, art directors, publishers, agents, academics, and others who are there to help you realize your creative goals. I invited Alison and George onto the show to learn more about how the Highlights Foundation began, their role in supporting diverse and own voices, and where they'd like to lead the organization into the future.

For more than 30 years, the Highlights Foundation has been fulfilling its mission of improving the quality of children’s literature by helping authors and illustrators hone their craft. We’d like to invite you to join us for a workshop or retreat at our Retreat Center in the beautiful Pocono Mountains. This property is the former home of the Founders of Highlights for Children and is located near the Highlights office in Honesdale, Pennsylvania.

Alison Green Myers wanted to join the circus.
She wanted to train tigers.
She wanted to jump through fire.
She wanted to stand on a wire, suspended high above a cheering crowd.
She probably spent too much time at her local library, especially inside the pages of If I Ran The Circus.
Alison never made it to the circus (though she did travel on a carnival for many years) but her early trips to the library fed her in other ways. She spent the first half of her career teaching reading and writing, and now finds herself working in the majestic circus of children’s book publishing as program coordinator for the Highlights Foundation and assistant-to-the-assistant editor for a small press. Alison writes about the wilds of life, mostly humans, but other scary beasts too. She is a regional advisor for SCBWI and a fellow of the National Writing Project.
