MASL 2018 Presentations

I'm presenting a number of sessions at the Maryland Association of School Librarians (MASL) annual conference today.

SESSION 1: Author Panel

Meet the authors and illustrators joining us for the 2018 MASL conference. Our panelists will introduce attendees to their newest works and draw connections between their works and supporting the new AASL standards. Moderator Matthew Winner will facilitate discussions between attendees and panelists on the impact of incorporating contemporary, high quality literature from diverse voices into instructional practices. How better to build familiarity with the new AASL standards than through a connection to powerful literature and the authors and illustrators creating these works!

SESSION 2: Illustrator Showdown

Meet our guest illustrators joining us for the 2018 MASL conference through an engaging high energy drawing competition. Our panelists will introduce attendees to their newest works and then will be paired in a drawing competition with prompts connecting to the new AASL standards and winners determined by the audience. Moderator Matthew Winner will engage attendees in making connections to the language of the standards, visual literacy as represented through the standards, and how our students are reflected throughout.

SESSION 4: Inclusion: Walking the Walk (co-presenting with Paula Chase, author)

We talk about books acting as windows and as mirrors for our students, allowing readers to see their own experiences, cultures, and identities and the experiences, cultures, and identities in our schools, neighborhoods, and throughout the globe, but where specifically does the school librarian fit into this role and responsibility? What steps can she or he take to better understand the existing landscape and how diversity is represented in their library program as well as their teaching? The co-presenters will share their varied experiences in the school and publishing communities and what strategies and resources can be implemented to make positive change as a professional and throughout a library program. We will draw direct connections to several AASL standards.
