Podcast Bunny Presents #6: An Interview with Arfy of CAN I BE YOUR DOG? by Troy Cummings
DEAR AUDIENCE,
Podcast Bunny here! I normally try to do my interviews at the home of my guest so that he or she feels most comfortable. However, after inviting Arfy I received the following letter back in the mail for reasons that you'll soon understand. Read on and please enjoy!
Your pal,
PODCAST BUNNY
DEAR FRIENDLY RABBIT,
WOOF! Thank you for interviewing me for your computer website. I'm sorry I can't speak, but I do know how to write! Please come to my house and I can write down my answers to your questions.
Also, I have a new squeaky bone.
Sincerely,
ARFY
PODCAST BUNNY: Hi Arfy! Thanks for inviting me over!
ARFY: You’re welcome! My tail has been wagging all week.
PODCAST BUNNY: I really enjoyed my walk over here. Do you have any favorite places to visit in town?
ARFY: YES! Three favorite places!
1. The post office, where I mail my letters.
2. The butcher shop, where the nice lady gives me dried giblets sometimes.
3. The shiny red hydrant near the firetruck building.
PODCAST BUNNY: I know already that you've got at least one amazing human friend in your life. Do you have any animal friends?
ARFY: YOU! High four! Also, there’s a funny turtle at the library, a friendly pigeon at the bus stop, and this cranky old cat outside who I think is actually really nice but maybe just needs a friend or a new squeaky bone. I mean, squeaky fish.
PODCAST BUNNY: I read a story about the time you were looking for an owner and traveled all around town writing letters to people asking if you could be their dog. A lot of people told you "no". That must have been really hard. What did it feel like for you during that time, and did you ever think about giving up?
ARFY: Writing can be hard, especially when people say NO! or BAD DOG! But you can’t let those rejections stop you. When writing gets tough, it just means that you’re about to learn and grow, if you can put your paws to paper and try again. SIT! STAY! REVISE!
PODCAST BUNNY: I've been meaning to ask you, when and how did you learn to write? You're quite good at it.
ARFY: Thank you, friendly rabbit! I learned to write when I found an old scoring pencil behind the bowling alley. I started by copying newspaper comics and bus schedules, and worked my way up to letters.
PODCAST BUNNY: Do you still write letters now that you have an owner?
ARFY: Instead of owner, I like to call Mitzy my partner! And yes—I still write letters all the time. My favorite part is licking the stamps, even if they’re the sticker kind that you’re not supposed to lick.
PODCAST BUNNY: Do you have any advice for any other folks looking for a good companion?
ARFY: Finding a friend can be tougher than a rawhide chew toy. You need to keep working at it, but also know that it can take a long time.
During those times when I was alone, I gave myself the treat of doing stuff I was good at: walking in the park, fetching tennis balls, and writing letters.
And the funny part was: all that stuff didn’t help me find a companion— it helped her find me! WOOF!
PODCAST BUNNY: Okay, just a few more quick questions before I go. How old are you?
ARFY: I was a couple of years old until Mitzy found me. And now I think I’m 300, because every day feels like my birthday!
PODCAST BUNNY: Do you go to school?
ARFY: YES! There’s a hole in the fence near the kickball field at Butternut Elementary, so I go there every day. Even Saturday!
PODCAST BUNNY: What's your favorite food?
ARFY: Peanut butter! No, wait. Dog biscuits! Oh -- I mean, strawberries! Oh shoot—there’s also this amazing stick in the backyard I can’t stop gnawing. Do I have to pick one?
PODCAST BUNNY: Who's your best friend?
ARFY: That’s easy: Mitzy! She’s my person, and she loves me, fleas and all.
PODCAST BUNNY: Can I come over again sometime soon?
ARFY: Yes! Or I can come to your house! Do you have a squeaky carrot?
PODCAST BUNNY: No, but my mom makes a carrot cake that will make your feet go thumping! Thanks for letting me come over, Arfy! Tell Mitzy I said thanks, too. See you next time!
ARFY: Thank you, friendly rabbit!
Truly yours,
ARFY
