We experience the story through Jameela, a writer and budding journalist who passionately wants to make her mark on the school’s newspaper. The story is a lens through which readers experience that how we are in the world and how we react and respond to things going on in the world has everything to do with who we are and who we are becoming. There are so many moments throughout MORE TO THE STORY where a side of our characters is revealed and they must confront what this truth means. Fairness, microaggressions, exploitation, trauma. They are part of life, and our reactions to them communicate our values.

When Jameela Mirza is picked to be feature editor of her middle school newspaper, she’s one step closer to being an award-winning journalist like her late grandfather.
