THE SANDCASTLE THAT LOLA BUILT (Podcast Bunny Presents #10)
Summer's so close you can almost smell the ocean waves crashing on the sand! We're back with another Podcast Bunny Presents!
To those new the series, I do a lot of interviews for the Children's Book Podcast and ever since joining the team Podcast Bunny has been really excited to host some interviews of his own. It turns out he's been making friends with all sorts of wonderful main characters in his favorite picture books. Podcast Bunny conducts the interviews himself and I post them here each Monday for everyone to enjoy. You can read all of Podcast Bunny's interviews HERE.
We hope you enjoy!
Podcast Bunny Presents #10: An Interview with Lola of THE SANDCASTLE THAT LOLA BUILT by Megan Maynor and Kate Berube
PODCAST BUNNY: Hi Lola! Thanks for inviting me over! Or, in this case, maybe I should say "Thanks for inviting me along"! Do you come to this beach often?
LOLA: I ask to come to the beach every day, but sometimes my mom says no. But sometimes she says yes!
PODCAST BUNNY: Who usually comes with you when you come to the beach?
LOLA: My mom. She likes to read at the beach. I don’t know why. I mean, I like reading, but not at the beach where there’s waves and sand and shells!
I say, “Mom, you can read anywhere.” And she says, “I know. Isn’t that great?”
* shrug * I don’t get it.
PODCAST BUNNY: I don't think anyone understands their parents, Lola! Bunny podcasters included.
I can probably guess, but what's your favorite thing to do at the beach?
LOLA: I like to build sandcastles—and other things too. You can build almost anything with sand. Well not a real house that you could live in. But any kind of shape. Like a turtle, a starfish, a seahorse… One time, I made a sand octopus with eight sand legs!
PODCAST BUNNY: I read a story about you once where you're joined by a number of different kids who help you build your sandcastle. Do you normally build alone? Was this your first time working with friends?
LOLA: It depends who’s at the beach that day. And how I feel.
Sometimes it’s fun work together and make something enormous.
And sometimes it’s fun to work alone and make every part just how I like it.
PODCAST BUNNY: I've gotta say, I was really impressed with the amount of details and levels in your sandcastle. It was definitely one of the most elaborate castles I've ever seen at the beach!
LOLA: I know! Me too! It was the biggest sandcastle I’ve ever seen!
When people would see it for the first time, they would go, “Whoa…” and stop and look at it for awhile.
PODCAST BUNNY: Want to know something else I noticed? You were smiling every time I saw you working on that castle! Did you ever get nervous working with these new kids? Because it really looked like you did a good job with teamwork!
LOLA: No, I didn’t feel nervous. I mean sometimes when you work together, someone might build something you don’t like. But sometimes they might build something you didn’t even think of! And that is like the best surprise!
It’s funny you said “teamwork” because if someone were to write a story about my day at the beach, they might originally write “This is the team that Lola built,” at the end of that story. And even though those words wouldn’t be in the final version of the story, the person who wrote the story might be happy to hear that you noticed that teamwork was part of the heart of the story.
I’m guessing.
PODCAST BUNNY: Lola, somebody DID write a story about your day at the beach! I'll have to get you a copy. The author who wrote it also has a few books about a girl and her penguin friend. I bet they'd be fun to interview some time!
But anyway... back on track! What was your favorite detail of that castle?
LOLA:: There were so many shells! Did you see all those individual shells?
This is what I mean about friends building things you didn’t even think of—because that castle ended up way fancier than it would’ve been if it was just me building it.
PODCAST BUNNY: Well, I'm so sorry that the waves came along and knocked your castle down. I know that happens sometimes, but I'm sure it made you and your friends feel sad.
LOLA: Yeah. I definitely felt blue when that happened.
PODCAST BUNNY: Whatever happened to the sea glass that was on the top of your castle? Do you think it went back out to sea? Do you think any mermaids found it?
LOLA: After that big wave, my friend from Minnesota found the sea glass! We used it in our next sandcastle.
And if you thought the first sandcastle was amazing, you should’ve seen what we built next!
Just imagine the best sandcastle ever in the whole world. It was like that.
PODCAST BUNNY: Wow! Maybe you can draw me a picture of it if you remember it!
Okay, just a few more quick questions before I go. What's your favorite food?
LOLA: My favorite snack to take to the beach is fish crackers and lemonade. But you have to dry your hands before you eat the crackers! Otherwise, soggy crackers.
PODCAST BUNNY: Who's your best friend?
LOLA: I don’t have a best friend. I have some friends in my neighborhood and some friends at my school. And then I find new friends to play with every time I’m at the beach or the park. Don’t you? I bet you do!
PODCAST BUNNY: Can I come over again some time soon?
LOLA: Of course!
PODCAST BUNNY: What should we do next time I visit?
LOLA: Go to the beach! I’ll bring the shovels and pails.
PODCAST BUNNY: Thanks for letting me come over, Lola! Please tell all of your mom and your beach friends that I said hi! See you next time!
LOLA: Bye, Podcast Bunny!
Thanks for visiting with us, Lola! And a big thank you to Megan Maynor and Kate Berube, just because!
